The skill we're not taught at University.
You learned refraction, diagnosis, management and even cranial nerves. But not the thing that holds everything together..
We were taught everything about the eye. All the cells and layers that come with it.
But the biggest difference in how patients respond to us?
Communication.
Not just the friendly chit-chat
But the type that builds trust, creates clarity and gives patients the confidence to say ‘yes’.
What I’ve noticed over the years is
Most Optometrists try to over-explain. We lose the patient half way through because they have no understanding of the technical terms.
Other Optometrists under-recommend. They try not to sound pushy, but then leave the patients confused with little clarity.
Often, we end up talking to the patient, not with them.
It’s not that we don’t care. We were just trained to examine, not influence.
But when we learnt to communicate with confidence and clarity..
Patient’s understand more.
They trust out recommendations.
They leave feeling confident, not confused.
This is exactly how I help Optometrists in my Consult with Impact course.
It’s all about becoming experts in conversations that drive better care and better business.
